Annual Outing

Our annual  Educational  Trip this year was to Powderham Castle and Exeter. Members were joined  by family and friends trip which was free for members.

 

We started with a guided tour of the castle and found out about the chequered history of the Courtenay family, who have made the castle their home since 1390. We were very lucky with the weather and allenjoyed walking about the castle in glorious sunshine.

From Powderham we headed to Exeter for individuals to enjoy the city. Some visited the cathedral, some the  museum and lots enjoyed the opportunity for some retail therapy. With a sweet based quiz on the bus all agreed this was a great trip and we are looking forward to next year’s.

Cornwall Air Ambulance

There was initial disappointment when the services of the Cornwall Air Ambulance were called upon ahead of our visit for a talk and the opportunity to meet the crew at their base at Newquay Airport, but as if on schedule, the helicopter returned just as the presentation got underway and members and accompanying friends and family were able to meet some of the crew and get up close to the second helicopter in the hangar.  Donations for a delicious cream tea with home baked items, proceeds from a raffle and a donation from Crowlas and Ludgvan WI realised a total of approximately £160 to go towards this very worthy cause.

September Book Club

Members met at Kathy’s house to discuss their latest read: 84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff.

After discussing the book, a collection of letters spanning twenty years between an American book lover and a London Bookseller, they watched the 1987 film adaptation. To everyone’s delight Kathy had prepared food from the picnic detailed in the book, Turkey sandwiches, devilled eggs and a pineapple upside down cake.

A Chair Project

When Ludgvan School needed some help in upgrading 60 pupil chairs they knew who to turn to and contacted their local WI . President Alison Latham and committee member Val Puddiphatt went along to the school during the summer holiday to meet the Headmaster Adam Anderson and take a look at what might be involved. Always keen to take on a project, they were more than happy to help and a plea was sent out to members for their time and assistance in renovating the chairs. With a few husbands coming along too, the work took place in sessions over the holidays, stripping down the old fabric and padding and replacing it with new vibrant blue. The staff and children were delighted with the result and thanked Crowlas and Ludgvan WI with lovely letters saying how comfortable they are and how they will help them concentrate in class.

Cake, Craft and Camping

Mary, Gail and Sue model their crowns made as part of the Cakes, Craft and Camping Weekend organised by CFWI. Joining members from 16 other WI’s in decorated tents, everyone was able to choose from a fantastic variety of activities including  archery, knitting, scone-making,  zipwiring,  pedal carting, making paper flower crowns; making stencilled bags, bushcraft, and much more. August Monthly Meeting

The August Meeting was a very food orientated affair. Our Guest Speaker was Liz  Llewellyn-Jones, known to many as a member of the CFWI as a member of the Board of Trustees. Liz talked about her career in Catering in the Royal Navy, with a selection of fascinating photographs and anecdotes that illustrated the fun and hard worked that it entailed. An August indoor picnic has become customary at CLWI, and members chose their sandwich variety and were presented with a paper picnic bag complete with individual picnic – the sandwiches wrapped in reusable Beeswax Wraps to take away. The committee had spend an enjoyable day making the wraps, some of which were also available to buy on the evening.

August Walk

Another coastal walk this month but with a difference!  The walk was mainly over moorland and fields and flat!  We followed the coastal path starting at Predannack Wollas to Soapy Cove where there was a steep descent and ascent. We continued along to Kynance Cove and stopped to eat and to admire the views of Mounts Bay, heather and wild flowers.
The return inland followed a bridal way skirting the old wartime aerodrome of Predannack.  Old rusted aeroplanes are still visible and the airfield was busy with gliders making the most of the good weather.  (Shirley B)

Tregonning Garden Visit

Fourteen lucky Crowlas & Ludgvan members were given a wonderful tour of Tregonning Garden today by owners Andrew and Kate. The garden, while not particularly large, is definitely a labour of love for the couple. It is located on the side of Tregonning Hill, affording spectacular views over the countryside. Andrew and Kate, who moved to the spot in 2008, have put in endless hours of work to create the garden which boasts two ponds, a stream, a beautiful vegetable garden and a meadow featuring a sculpted compass pattern, as well as a myriad flower beds. There was a tremendous amount to see, and Andrew guided the group through the garden, explaining its creation and inspiration.
Fortunately, the rain held off, so the women were able to sit on the lovely patio to enjoy cake and coffee after their tour. As well as being a superb gardener, Kate is also a star baker! Sadly, she doesn’t think she has time to join the WI at the moment.
While eating, the group was asked to make a guess as to the temperature in the compost heap and Jane Haward came closest. The actual temperature was a whopping 53C! Finally, before thanking their friendly hosts and heading home, many of the members bought plants beetroot, runner beans, cucumbers from Andrew and Kate’s garden.
What a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

Party at Julia”s

IMG_4983Sun hats, sun dresses and sunglasses were aplenty as we beat the odds and proved the forecast from earlier in the week wrong with a gloriously sunny day for our garden party at Julia and Richard’s.  Admittedly, we were teased with a little sprinkle of rain as members with friends and family arrived but 100% sunshine thereafter. Our wonderful hosts provided a sumptuous feast including bangers from the barbecue with committee members providing calorie free (ahem!!) desserts fit for a queen.
 
The jazz music in the background got toes tapping but did not succeed in drowning out the chatter and laughter that continued throughout the afternoon.
 
One of our members was amazed to see an original poster of an old train train station holiday poster in Julia’s loo !  She recognised herself wearing a dress made by her mother walking with her little niece. The man just behind them is actually the artist. Our member was walking up a street in Newlyn to her in-laws and the artist asked to take their picture. He then used the picture to create the poster incorporating himself into it too.
