Our Book Club met at The Queen’s Hotel in Penzance for their latest meeting, enjoying the delicious refreshments and unrivalled view, despite the gloomy weather.

The book for February was “The Goldfinch” by Donna Tartt – which is quite a lengthy story based on a boy, Theo Decker aged thirteen, son of a devoted mother and an absent father.     He miraculously survives a catastrophe that otherwise tears his life apart.   Alone and rudderless in New York, he is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend.   Theo is tormented by longing for his mother and down the years he clings to the thing that reminds him of her: a small captivating painting that ultimately draws him into the criminal underworld.

Martin Brockman, Heritage and Education Officer for the RNLI was the February speaker at The Murley Hall. Martin gave a detailed audio visual talk on the tragic 1967 Torrey Canyon disaster, with a moment by moment account of the fateful course, to it’s grounding on the Seven Stones reef. Personal photographs and recollections of the attempted rescue and subsequent oil spill brought back memories for many members who remember the incident well.

With the weather at it’s February worst, Snappers, our photography group, abandoned their coast path plans and headed inside for hot chocolate and a discussion on Black and White photography. Over the next few days, pets, household objects and local scenes were photographed in both colour and black and white to help explore texture ,and tone in a different way.

The Deli, Carbis Bay was the fantastic location for the February Meeting of our Meet and Eat subgroup. 15 members had a delicious lunch, taking advantage of the special ‘Winter Lunch’ menu with such delights as beer battered fish and chips or crispy pork belly. It was their first time visiting, but members agreed it was one to which they would like to return.

The Crowlas and Ludgvan WI Feast Meeting was our first event of 2024. The entertainment was by well known Cornish duo “Twin Harmony”.  Morwenna and Jenna Matthews sang a numbers of songs, some as a duet and some accompanied by dad John and mum Kathy. John also played the guitar, and mum the tambourine. 

There were a variety of songs, some with a link to Cornwall. John and Morwenna sang the first verse of White Rose in Cornish and the evening ended with the popular Cornwall my Home.

Pasties and tea were enjoyed in the interval.

To round off 2023 members met at The Murley Hall for a fun and festive Christmas party, with a fantastic music quiz by Magic Mike, pass the parcel and of course, mince pies and mulled wine.

What a delightful Christmas Lunch at The Old Quay House, Hayle. Delicious food and friendship all round. Thank you to our wonderful committee for organising it. Wishing you all a Happy and Peaceful Christmas.

There was an extra reason to enjoy the December Coffee Morning at The Murley Hall. Val P held a craft tutorial in making Pearl Angels that are delightful to adorn your festive tree or as a little gift for someone special. Everyone was delighted with their decorations and thanked Val for the seasonal lesson.

Our Snappers photography group took a ride down to The Count House at Botallack to see the exhibition of photographs by eco artist Rosie Sherwood. The pictures showed the dramatic Zennor landscape after the wildfires of July 2022.

Other Snappers news: We are pleased report that member Lisa Elsey was awarded second prize for her photo under the theme of ‘An Autumn Scene’ at the recent Winter Fair at Wadebridge.

Gail’s craft group met in November to make these very stylish wreaths. They are quick to make out of scraps of fabric, and can be matched to your decor or seasonal colour scheme.
