Royal Cornwall Show 2017

Smiles from Gill and Colleen

Colleen’s report on tea duty at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show:  ‘The WI Tea Tent was on its usual jaunty slope – downhill to the urns or uphill to the teapots. The weather was very mixed so the tent was either empty in the sunshine or or full during the rain. In our break Gill and I visited the cattle pens, where some ‘big boy bulls’ seemed really pleased to see us, which was very flattering! All in all we had a good fun day, and actually managed to find our car this time, before night fell.

Camera Club May Meeting

Members of Camera Club spent a fun afternoon dropping strawberries and other fruits into containers of water to capture a splash at the moment of impact. Finding the right settings on their cameras proved the easy part, with everyone helping each other understand how to achieve the optimum shutter speed and ISO. Pressing the button at the right time was a little more tricky, with several photos of empty glasses before everyone mastered the 3 – 2 – 1 -Click!

Next month’s meeting will be on Friday 16th June 1.30pm at Baker’s Pit Nature Reserve at Nancledra. New members of any ability are always welcome. Contact Helen Kestle for further details. (Advance notice – July meeting will be Friday 14th July , venue TBA).

Ludgvan Open Village

Jane and Pat man the stall

It was a successful day for Crowlas and Ludgvan WI at the 2017 Ludgvan Open Village. With a stall full of cakes, plants, books and craft items there was plenty for people to browse and buy. Despite the rain coming in, a brilliant £125 was raised (£25 of which was donated to the Ludgvan Open Village Charities). Many thanks to those who looked after the stall and those who baked, crafted and donated items.

Silver Jewellery Workshop

Members of Crowlas and Ludgvan WI were joined by ladies from other local WI’s for a productive day making silver jewellery. With tuition from Eddie at Penzance School of Art, we learned to use saws, pliers, hammers, solder and chemicals to produce our jewellery. A fantastic array of items developed over the course of the day, from earrings to rings, pendants and bangles, and everyone went home with something lovely to show off. Many thanks to Val Puddiphatt for organising the Workshop.

Carnon Downs Fashion Show

Members of Crowlas and Ludgvan W I joined dozens of other ladies from around the county for a fun filled evening at the CFWI Fashion Show at Carnon Downs Garden Centre. Our models Colleen and Shirley looked totally professional as they modelled their outfits on the catwalk and a great evening was had by all!

May Walk

Our walk, from Constantine Church afforded us another opportunity to admire the wild flowers. The hedgerows are certainly looking their colourful best this month.
Our route from the Church took us through the outskirts of the pretty village. We followed a stream along a sheltered valley before eventually entering woods by the remains of an old water mill. From there we had a steady climb through mainly beech woods and bluebells.
We made frequent stops to look not only at bluebells but other plants and wild flowers. Our walk ended back at the Church where we had a picnic in a good sunny but breezy spot.  (Report by Shirley)

Cake Sale – update

Despite the rain, we had a good turnout for the Great Cornish Cake Bake in aid of Cornwall Hospice Care. Members donated beautiful home-baked cakes and lots of people came along for a chance to chat and raise funds for a worthwhile cause. Many thanks to all the volunteers, cake makers and those who gave contributions.

We raised a total of £117 – well done to everyone!
