Fundraising in Causewayhead

With fantastic weather and great support from our members our fundraising stall in Causewayhead raised £155. Thank you to everyone who brought along items to sell; baked goods, craft items, plants and books and also to all those who helped out on the stall over the course of the day. Well done everyone!

Amblers – the first outing

With Shirley’s Monthly Walking Group already a popular regular event in our calendar, those less able to undertake a five mile ramble in the countryside have formed a group to get out and enjoy an amble at a slower pace. The first meeting took Jane, Kathy and Gail, plus Ruby the dog, along Penzance promenade with a visit to the new Zebra Crossing cafe. If you would like to join the Amblers on their next outing please get in touch with Jane or Kathy.

Book Club Garden Party

The Annual Book Club Summer Garden Party took place this week, with the wet weather preventing even a step into Colleen’s lovely garden. Nevertheless, with a scrumptious array of food and great company, a lovely afternoon was had by all. The book discussed was ‘The L-Shaped Room’ by Lynne Reid Banks and members pondered on the differences in society’s view of a single unmarried mother in 1960 and in modern times. Next month’s book club will be on Wednesday 26th July, at the usual time of 7.30pm when the book to talk about is ‘The Thread’ by Victoria Hislop. New members are always welcome (see Colleen for more details)

June Walk

Glorious View
Our walk this month was mainly along the coastal foot path from Porthcuno to Gwennap Head. The sea was calm, the beautiful sandy coves inviting, the granite cliffs a challenge and the weather perfect.
At Gwennap Head we had a quick look at the Coastwatch Lookout before returning to Porthgwarra for a picnic lunch followed by ice cream.
From there we headed back passing St Levan’s Well and Porthchapel Beach before the steep climb to the Minack Theatre. Alison and Rob were sensible and had planned ahead; as we were leaving, they were heading for Porthcurno beach and a swim. (Shirley)

Visit from St Mary’s W I

Seven members of St. Mary’s, Isles of Scilly, WI have recently returned to the islands after a short exchange visit to their link WI, Crowlas and Ludgvan. Not only were the ladies blessed with beautiful sunny weather, but all were so warmly welcomed, hosted for two nights, entertained and treated.
The smooth crossing on an early Scillonian III meant that there was time on the first afternoon for a trip to St. Michael’s Mount after lunch. Some ladies chose to tour the castle, others sought shade in the lush gardens and then it was off to our host homes to freshen up before joining the Crowlas and Ludgvan WI monthly meeting. There was a supper of hot pasties and homemade cakes followed by a demonstration of “Sexing up your Salads” by Helen Thomas from Archie Brown’s of Penzance. It was interesting to see how different WIs operate, with plenty of new ideas to take back and share.
The following day, another hot one, began with the scenic train ride along the coast from St. Erth to St. Ives. First on the agenda was an excellent guided tour and talk at Barbara Hepworth’s studio and deliciously shady sculpture garden. Everyone adjourned for lunch at a beachside restaurant, after which groups dispersed to do their own things: some headed for the shops, some the beach and some back to hosts homes for the chance to chat or rest in a cooler spot. The finale to the visit was a large group meal at Marazion, overlooking the emerging causeway and Mount.
Everyone from St. Mary’s felt very lucky to have had the chance to better get to know our WI friends across the water, and we look forward to returning the favour soon by sharing our homes and islands again. (Karrie Skaife, St Mary’s WI)

Royal Cornwall Show 2017

Smiles from Gill and Colleen

Colleen’s report on tea duty at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show:  ‘The WI Tea Tent was on its usual jaunty slope – downhill to the urns or uphill to the teapots. The weather was very mixed so the tent was either empty in the sunshine or or full during the rain. In our break Gill and I visited the cattle pens, where some ‘big boy bulls’ seemed really pleased to see us, which was very flattering! All in all we had a good fun day, and actually managed to find our car this time, before night fell.

Camera Club May Meeting

Members of Camera Club spent a fun afternoon dropping strawberries and other fruits into containers of water to capture a splash at the moment of impact. Finding the right settings on their cameras proved the easy part, with everyone helping each other understand how to achieve the optimum shutter speed and ISO. Pressing the button at the right time was a little more tricky, with several photos of empty glasses before everyone mastered the 3 – 2 – 1 -Click!

Next month’s meeting will be on Friday 16th June 1.30pm at Baker’s Pit Nature Reserve at Nancledra. New members of any ability are always welcome. Contact Helen Kestle for further details. (Advance notice – July meeting will be Friday 14th July , venue TBA).

Ludgvan Open Village

Jane and Pat man the stall

It was a successful day for Crowlas and Ludgvan WI at the 2017 Ludgvan Open Village. With a stall full of cakes, plants, books and craft items there was plenty for people to browse and buy. Despite the rain coming in, a brilliant £125 was raised (£25 of which was donated to the Ludgvan Open Village Charities). Many thanks to those who looked after the stall and those who baked, crafted and donated items.
