A temporary new home!

While the Murley Hall is having a facelift, we’re going to shift our home temporarily to Ludgvan School.

69. Ludgvan CP School, Entrance

Finding a venue that was available on Monday evenings wasn’t easy! With Scouts, badminton, archery, etc., it seemed nearly every possible location was already booked.

But we’re very happy with our decision to use the School, especially as it’s on our ‘home turf’. And there’s a nice bit of synchronicity in that both Ludgvan School and Crowlas & Ludgvan WI have anemone logos!

We’ll be using the school for our February, March and April meetings. It’s possible we may also need to be there for our May meeting, but that depends on progress at the Murley Hall. We’ll keep you posted.

We look forward to seeing you all at Ludgvan School on the 15th.

Card-making workshop

At the end of January, a group of members met at Gail’s house for a day of card-making.

01

The ladies created some gorgeous cards, all of which will be used for our members’ birthdays throughout the coming year.

02

Wait until your big day and watch the post for a beautiful handmade work of art!

January Walking Group

Shirley’s walking group were very lucky with the weather and chose one of the only dry days of the month for their walk!

The group enjoyed a lovely sunny but crisp day for their first walk of the year through the Penrose Estate. The route was extremely busy with walkers, babies in buggies, cyclists, plenty of dogs and even a couple of horses. It looked as though everyone had been tempted out with the fine weather!

The group finished with a light lunch at the Lakeside Cafe in Helston, but were all having too much fun to take any photos!

If you missed the January walk but would like to join the group next month, just send us an email on crowlasludgvanwi@gmail.com.

Embroiderers’ Guild South West Regional Festival Day

Those of you who are embroiderers or who appreciate beautiful embroidery may want to save Saturday 9 April in your diaries!

That’s the date of the Embroiderers’ Guild South West Regional Festival Day, to be held at the Pavilion Centre at the Royal Cornwall Showground in Wadebridge. This year’s festival is titled ‘A Day Out in Cornwall’.

The festival speakers are Amanda Clayton and Vivien Prideaux, and there will also be loads of trade stalls including Art Van Go, GJ Beads, Mulberry Silks, Sara’s Texture Crafts and Stef Francis.

A competition titled ‘A Postcard from the Seaside’ is open to members, young embroiderers and others.

Tickets are £25 which includes a picnic-style lunch plus tea, coffee and cake.

For details, bookings and competition entry forms, email swfestival2016@btinternet.com.

Feast Night

This year’s Feast was great fun!

02

While members and guests ate soup, rolls and A LOT of puddings, they filled the Murley Hall with laughter and chatter.

03

After the tables had been cleared, we all set down to some good old-fashioned party games. Here, the winning team puts the finishing touches on their spaghetti and marshmallow tower.

Camera Club going strong!

Our Camera Club met yesterday for a photo wander around Wyevale Garden Centre.

16

We managed to capture everything, from the sublime…

09

… to the ridiculous.

35

It really was an exercise in learning to use our eyes and spot interesting things to photograph everywhere we looked. We snapped beautiful flowers, tawdry 80% off Christmas decorations and even what we thought was a real duck on the pond (it was plastic).

Our photo session was followed, as usual, by a sit-down with coffee, cake and biscuits.

36

Next month we’re all going to discuss our potential entries into the 2016 CFWI Photography Competition.

If you’d like to join the Club, please drop Helen a line (either on crowlasludgvanwi@gmail.com or on 01736 753104). You don’t need to be an expert – we’re all learning together (and trying to break the habit of leaving those cameras on the Automatic setting!). It’s a very collaborative and supportive group and we’d love to have you!

Christmas Doings

We’ve all been having a very jolly Christmas season – so jolly that there hasn’t been much time to update this site!

First was our wonderful annual Christmas meal out. This year we were at the Godolphin Arms in Marazion and it was absolutely fantastic! The food was perfect, the staff was friendly and warm and the whole atmosphere was as festive as we could ever have hoped for.

Most of us were all too busy enjoying ourselves to remember to take any pictures, but Ruth did snap this lovely one of Ali, Ann and Karen. How many bottles did you get through, ladies?

01

Next was Shirley’s fabulous wreath-making workshop in the Murley Hall. As always, some beautiful masterpieces were created and I’m sure there are a lot of front doors being admired in Crowlas and Ludgvan this season!

Last, but certainly, not least, was a celebratory Christmas afteroon at Julia’s house. As well as the obligatory mulled wine and mince pies, there were also sausage rolls and some delicious spiced cider. Friends and family came along and everyone had a jolly time.

Thank you so much to Kathy for organising our meal at the Godolphin, Shirley for her patience in teaching us how to make Christmas wreaths and Julia for welcoming us all into her lovely home.

Happy Christmas to everyone!

What we’ve read this year

If you’re unsure about whether or not to join our book group, have a look at the list of wonderful and diverse books the ladies have read during the past year:

Stars and Bars by William Boyd
Travels with My Aunt by Graham Greene
The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton
An Officer and a Spy by Robert Harris
A Street Cat Named Bob by James Bowen
Gold by Chris Cleave
The Kashmir Shawl by Rosie Thomas
Elizabeth is Missing by Emma Healey
Bella Cora by Phillip Margulies
The Seven Sisters by Margaret Drabble
The Sunrise by Victoria Hislop

And click here for a full list of everything the group has read since 2004!

If you think this sounds right up your street, have a word with Colleen, our book group organiser, at our next meeting – or send us an email on crowlasludgvanwi@gmail.com and we’ll make sure Colleen gets your message.

Tea and Tinsel at Chy Noweth

Seven of us had a wonderful time yesterday afternoon at Chy Noweth at ‘Tea & Tinsel’.

02

03

There was a Christmas-themed quiz and some delicious refreshments. After we were all full, there was some hysterically funny entertainment involving some dodgy elf ears.

Sue, Mary and Val were very serious about their quiz.

And, to top it all off, we had a visit from Father Christmas himself, who brought a present for each of us. He seemed to take a real shine to County Chair Barbara Corbett!

It was such a jolly afternoon and put us all in the mood for Christmas! Thanks to the Board of Trustees for entertaining us all so well.

Christmas shopping in Exeter!

(Gail’s report on the shopping trip to Exeter)

Yesterday’s ‘not-just-Christmas-shopping’ trip to Exeter was a great day out.

01

We had an easy trip up and arrived earlier than expected. The weather was extremely kind to us and in between shopping we were able to sit around the cathedral green and do some people-watching.

Look at all those full shopping bags!
Look at all those full shopping bags!

The Christmas market was as enticing as ever, with the cooking smells of a world of foods wafting in the air.

04

Even if you aren’t a keen shopper, you’d enjoy Exeter. The city is steeped in history and you can discover all sorts of interesting buildings.

We were able to meet up with former member Maureen Fordham who was on good form and who sends her best wishes to all the Crowlas & Ludgvan members.

03

A good day was had by all!

(Thanks for the photos as well, Gail!)
