St. Ives Archive

I think we all enjoyed last night’s talk by Janet Axten about Tom Heron, Alec Walker and Crysede. For those of you who’d like to learn a little more, do consider a visit to the St. Ives Archive office. They’ve got a big binder full of Crysede-related photos, old newspaper advertising, etc. It’s fascinating stuff!

t0296The Archive is located upstairs above the Parish Rooms behind the War Memorial Gardens just opposite the church, and is open from 10am-4pm, Tuesday through Friday. It’s got lots of information for anyone doing genealogical research or just for people interested in local history and has a massive collection of lovely old photos of St. Ives.

A very belated Royal Cornwall Show update

Royal Cornwall_1The Royal Cornwall Show was a busy few days for a number of our Crowlas & Ludgvan members. Julia and Beth were there working on behalf of the CFWI Board of Trustees, and Mary put in a lot of hard labour helping to set everything up as a member of the Exhibitions Sub-Committee.

Royal Cornwall_3Dorothy made an appearance in the WI Marquee with a table devoted to her lovely folk art. She was very clever to position herself directly below our Crowlas & Ludgvan penant!

And Colleen and Helen spent a long day serving tea and coffee.

It wasn’t all drudgery, though! We did get a peek at Princess Anne as she was escorted round our marquee by CFWI Chairman Kathy Reed.

Last but certainly not least, a huge amount of time and effort was put into our entry in the WI exhibition, ‘An Afternoon Tea for Today.’ We didn’t win, but our score was quite good and we did our WI proud! A big thank you to those who helped: Diane, Dorothy, Helen, Jane, Pat G., Shirley, Susan and Val P.

Better luck next year!

Book Club

Did you know that the Crowlas & Ludgvan WI Book Club has been going strong since 2004!? That’s over nine years!

During that time, they’ve read a huge variety of books, from Dan Brown to Barack Obama to Radcliffe Hall to Nancy Mitford. That’s quite a range!

To see a full list of the books that have been read so far, click here.

Ladies, might there be a big 10th anniversary celebration next year?

A few updates

car bootOn Thursday 20 June, we’ll be holding a car boot sale at Penzance Rugby Grounds. We’re looking for any unwanted household items you might have that you’d like to contribute to the cause – anything will do, but we would prefer not to have clothing or toys. If you’ve got anything for us, please bring it to Monday evening’s meeting. If, for some reason, you’re unable to come to the meeting, you can drop things off with Gill any time up until Thursday. And if you’re at a loose end on Thursday, stop in at the car boot sale and say hello to Sue and Helen who’ll be hard at work selling!

There are two fantastic craft days coming up that you may not yet have put your name down for:

First, on Monday 24 June, Hazel will be leading an oil-painting day. If you haven’t yet seen Hazel’s work, you’ll be very impressed – and she promises that we’ll be able to produce something worth hanging at home! No experience at all is required so don’t worry if you haven’t tried painting before. The workshop will be from 10am until 4pm. Bring a packed lunch, but coffee, tea and cake will be provided. The cost is the usual £2 hostess fee plus the cost of materials.

On Friday 26 July, there will be a felt ball workshop at Lis’s house. You’ve all noticed the lovely felt ball necklaces Lis wears, and here’s your chance to make your own! The workshop begins at 10am and goes until 3pm. There is a £2 hostess fee plus a charge of £5 for instruction and materials. You’ll be using gorgeous merino wool to create something absolutely stunning! Again, bring a packed lunch, but coffee, tea and cake will be provided.

For more information about either of the workshops, contact Lis on (01736) 754146.

Nunsense in Madron

nunsensePenzance Amatuer Operatic Society are performing Nunsense, a musical comedy, at Landithy Hall in Madron on the 14th, 15th and 16th of June. Tickets are £7 each and can be purchased by calling (01736) 363350 or popping into Morrab Studio in Penzance.
Nunsense is a wonderfully funny show. Five of the 19 surviving Little Sisters of Hoboken, a one-time missionary order that ran a leper colony on an island south of France, discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, accidentally killed the other 52 residents of the convent with her tainted vichyssoise while they were off playing bingo with a group of Maryknolls. Come and see what happens next!

News from the AGM

Lis Davies, our delegate to the NFWI Annual General Meeting held in Cardiff on Saturday, reports that the High Streets resolution passed with an 87% majority.

If you’ll recall, the resolution reads:

The NFWI notes with concern the continuing decline of our high streets and the damaging effect this has on local communities. We call on every member of the WI to support their local shops and make the high street their destination of choice for goods and services. We call on decision-makers to work collectively, at all levels, to help bring an end to the decline of our high streets and to ensure that high streets flourish and provide a focal point for local communities.

New NFWI Chair,
Janice Langley

Yesterday, NFWI Chair Ruth Bond stepped down after four years in the role. Our new chair is Janice Langley who has served as an NFWI Trustee since 2002, and most recently has served as NFWI Vice-Chair and Chair of the Membership Committee.

Speaking about the resolution, Janice said:

“This resolution has strong support from across our membership.  It’s clear to WI members that the value of our high streets and town centres is much deeper than their economic value alone.  It is not about turning back the tide, boycotting the internet and abandoning every other shopping channel, rather it is asking them to support local businesses and to think about what is on offer in their local community, and the difference their custom could make to local business survival, before turning to out-of-town shopping centres and online retailers.

“Local high streets are the heart of communities and we want to use this resolution as an opportunity to take a fresh look at what we can all do to help them adapt to meet the needs of communities and ensure they are fit for purpose in a rapidly changing world.”

Lis will make a brief presentation about her AGM experiences at our next monthly meeting on the 17th.

Tate St. Ives exhibit

For those of you looking forward to our June lecture about the Crysede textile company, you may be interested in the Summer Exhibition at Tate St. Ives.

The exhibition, which opened just a few days ago, includes some Crysede silk scarves featuring designs by a very young Patrick Heron, whose father Tom was Manager of the company. Patrick designed his first silk scarf at the age of fourteen!

Patrick Heron, from ‘The Brushwork Series No. 3’, 1998-1999.

The exhibition runs until 29 September. Admission to Tate St. Ives is £7.00 (£4.50 for concessions) and you can visit from 10:00am to 5:00pm every day, with extended hours to 6:00pm during the school holidays.

Litter Pick at Long Rock

This morning, a group of us faced the blustery wind and set off for Long Rock car park and beach to do some litter picking with Clean Cornwall.

01

Lara from Clean Cornwall gave us our gear and a few instructions and we were off!

06

Although it started as a cloudy day, the sun did come out and we all worked up a sweat. But the wind still made it very difficult to get our litter in our bags!

08

Although we didn’t think it would be a particularly dirty beach, we did fill an amazingly large number of bags!

Our heap of full bags, which were collected promptly by the Council

Let’s make this an annual event and start thinking of a spot for next spring’s litter pick!
